What this first release supports

Parallel horizontal or vertical field boards can cover a union of axis-aligned rectangles whose transverse steps and contained rectangular openings align to complete row edges. A single rectangular deck can also use up to two picture-frame courses and one breaker strip. Generated seams are allowed only at support coordinates you enter.

Fasteners stay method-specific

Face-fastener intersections, hidden side-joint intersections, and exact confirmed manufacturer coverage are calculated independently. The calculator never averages or silently combines them.

Important limits

Diagonal, chevron, herringbone, curved, heat-bent, and arbitrary-angle layouts are outside this release. Kerf defaults to zero only with a visible note, and end trims are not modeled.

Five checked numerical examples

These documented scenarios use repeatable inputs so you can compare the displayed quantities with the published methodology. They do not approve a project design or product selection.

  1. 12 by 10 foot field: 21 board rows, 21 stock boards, 420 face fasteners, and 2 fastener packages.
  2. Picture-frame layout: 24 field rows produce 28 identified cuts before stock allocation.
  3. One breaker strip: 21 rows produce 43 cuts plus one 120 inch breaker-strip requirement.
  4. Contained opening: The opening splits affected rows into 25 cuts assigned to 20 stock boards.
  5. Hidden-fastener method: 320 field fasteners and 32 starter components round to 4 selected packages.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a bounding rectangle instead of mapping every included region and contained opening.
  • Allowing a generated seam where no entered joist or other support exists.
  • Using the takeoff to infer joist spans, blocking, beams, ledgers, footings, stairs, or guard design.

No. It converts user-selected measurements and product data into a material takeoff within the limits stated above.
