Before you start
- Sketch each uninterrupted section or segment.
- Note whether the field asks for clear faces or post centres.
- Record units, stock lengths, and bag yields with each value.
US customary measurements
A bare number follows the unit displayed beside that field. For example,10.5 in a length field marked ft means 10.5 feet, while6 in a depth field marked in means 6 inches. Component widths, gaps and thicknesses can also use inches. Check each field before copying a number; explicit labels such as 10.5 in or 8 ft 3 1/2 in keep supported length inputs unambiguous. Opening datums differ by tool: fence gates use clear inside faces, while railing opening boundaries use post centres. Follow the tool's field label.
Metric measurements
Use millimetres, centimetres, or metres, such as 2400 mm, 240 cm, or 2.4 m. The calculator normalizes measurements internally before solving. Bare metric numbers also follow the field label: some fields use mm, while construction measurement fields use m. Copy the unit with the measurement.
Good field notes
- Sketch each straight segment.
- Mark gates, corners, and stairs separately.
- Check actual product stock lengths and bag yields before buying.
