MaterialNest is an independent, browser-based planning application for DIY deck, railing, fence, post-concrete, paver, and user-designed yard-drain material estimates. It is built to make ordinary quantity calculations easier to inspect and carry to the store; it is not a contractor, engineering service, retailer, or code authority.

Why it exists

A useful material estimate needs more than a final number. You need to know what was measured, which assumptions were applied, when a value was rounded to a purchasable unit, and which project decisions still require product or local guidance. MaterialNest keeps those details next to the result.

How results are built

Each calculator uses deterministic formulas with strict input validation. The application normalizes US and metric measurements, retains intermediate precision, and rounds only where the documented method calls for a whole purchase quantity. Solved examples and automated regression tests check representative inputs. The methodology pages publish the formulas, current versions, limitations, and change history.

Project contents are stored in the browser on the device you are using. MaterialNest does not require an account or claim cloud sync, professional review, live prices, or guaranteed quantities.

Review and corrections

Guides identify their sources, limitations, and review date. Formula changes are recorded in the public changelog and must pass the calculation and build checks before release. Comparable-tool and qualified domain-expert reviews are documented when completed; MaterialNest does not claim expert approval.

Product boundaries

MaterialNest provides planning estimates only. It does not determine structural safety, footing depth, permits, code compliance, installation requirements, or whether a selected product is suitable for a site. Verify the result against current manufacturer instructions and local requirements, and use a qualified professional for critical work.
