Variable-Height Deck Skirting Material Planner

Record measured grade, approved panel seams and access openings, then nest the physical panel blanks into selected sheet stock and retain rectangular remnants.

What this worksheet covers

Follow measured grade across each approved panel bay, preserve access openings, then nest the physical rectangular blanks for trapezoid cuts into sheet stock.

Support positions, panel suitability, clearances, ventilation, drainage, access hardware and fastening are selected externally. Enter opening area is reported without declaring ventilation sufficient. Grade between measured points is a straight-line approximation.

Import a saved measurement

Select a source, then an existing field with the same measurement unit. Add region or station rows first when needed. Confirm physical meaning and datum; importing a number does not approve a design or replace the rest of the required measurements.

Method and limits

Grade-following skirting is cut from whole sheets. Polygon-shaped installed pieces and rectangular purchasing blanks are deliberately different records.

Prepare the grade and blank record

  • Name one elevation datum for the top line, ground stations and hatch bottom.
  • Include both run ends, grade changes, approved seam supports and support at both hatch sides.
  • Retain the exact sheet dimensions, permitted orientation, cutting rules, clearance and hardware record.
  • Measure the installed polygon separately from its rectangular purchasing blank.

Illustrative 4 ft bay: top elevation +36 in, ground from 0 to +6 in, selected 1 in clearance and no hatch give installed heights of 35 and 29 in. With 0.25 in allowance on every side, the blank is 48.5 × 35.5 in. It cannot fit a sheet only 48 in wide in that orientation. Check permitted rotation and actual sheet dimensions; never trim the installed shape to force a fit. Grade triangles are cutting loss, not reusable rectangular remnants. Unsupported hatch or sheet-fit results require a revised externally supplied record.

Grade and access opening geometry

Enter a named top datum, run length, ground stations including both ends, selected ground clearance, approved supports and access openings. Ground elevation is linearly interpolated between stations. Each opening needs approved support at both sides and must fit below the top and above the grade. Bay boundaries, opening edges and grade changes split the installed polygons. Each blank uses that piece’s width and greatest height, plus cutting allowance on both sides.

blank width/height = bounding width/height + 2 × cut allowance

Sheet nesting and remnants

Blanks are sorted by decreasing area and fitted with a deterministic guillotine nesting heuristic. Ninety-degree rotation is used only when the exact panel record permits it. Kerf separates occupied and remaining rectangles; a new whole sheet is opened when no remaining rectangle fits. This is a valid physical nesting plan, not an optimal sheet-count guarantee. Purchased sheets round the assigned sheet count plus selected reserve up to whole sheets.

Only rectangular remnants meeting the minimum in both dimensions are retained. Triangular grade trimming is not advertised as reusable sheet stock. Separately entered trim cuts receive a straight-stock allocation with no additional reserve.

A supplied enclosure plan

Panel orientation, supports and trim identities come from exact source records. Bounded nesting work can reject oversized schedules. The quantity plan does not determine ventilation, drainage, access requirements, panel fastening or enclosure suitability.

Reconcile the finished surface and openings in Deck Boards first, then measure exposed fascia edges or the enclosure grade separately; surface area does not supply either schedule.
