Outdoor Wood Surface and Stain Planner

Use actual component exposure for fencing, decking and railing. Product preparation, compatible substrates, coverage and coats remain exact-label requirements.

What this worksheet covers

Record actual fence, deck or railing components and the faces you will finish. Compare a label coverage range and whole-can alternatives without a universal fence-style multiplier.

Selected surface measurement and label-based purchasing only. Preparation, substrate compatibility, application method and coats remain exact-label requirements.

Import a saved measurement

Select a source, then an existing field with the same measurement unit. Add region or station rows first when needed. Confirm physical meaning and datum; importing a number does not approve a design or replace the rest of the required measurements.

Import physical components and select finishing faces

Choose saved repair components or wood final cuts. Purchase reserve and uncut stock are excluded. Source IDs stay in the printed component record. Measure any missing width or thickness; confirm ripped profiles and covered areas yourself.

Activate a face with click, Enter or Space. Front and back toggle independently; long edges and ends cycle through zero, one and two selected faces. The editable rows below show the same choices.

Exact product / selected-plan source

Enter the measured layout and selected product information, then calculate. Exact schedules and a drawing appear here.

Method and limits

Coverage starts with the faces you will actually finish, not a fence silhouette or a deck footprint. Container alternatives are compared rather than added together.

Prepare the finish-face record

  • Identify each physical component and count it once.
  • Measure actual length, face width and thickness; select only the broad faces, long edges and ends to be finished.
  • For after-assembly work, measure blocked area per individual selected broad face.
  • Before-assembly finishing retains those selected faces even if later hidden.
  • Retain the exact substrate, preparation, coat-system and coverage label; a silhouette is not exposed area.

Illustrative record: ten 6 ft × 6 in boards, front and back selected, no edges or ends, have 60 ft² of broad faces. With 0.5 ft² blocked on each back, after-assembly exposure is 55 ft²; before-assembly exposure stays 60 ft². At an invented 200–300 ft²/gal per coat and two coats, after-assembly demand is 0.367–0.55 gal before reserve. With zero reserve, one selected 1 gal can covers the high estimate. If no can ID is selected, alternatives remain visible but no order enters Planner; missing product facts must be resolved from the label.

Selected faces, edges and blocked areas

For each component enter actual length, width, thickness and count, choose front/back faces, zero to two side edges and zero to two ends, and enter blocked area per selected broad face. Broad faces contribute length × width; side edges contribute length × thickness; ends contribute width × thickness. After-assembly work deducts entered blocked areas before multiplying by component count. Before-assembly work makes no blocked-face deduction.

exposed area = Σ count × (selected broad faces + side edges + ends − applicable blocked faces)

Coats and the coverage range

Enter the exact label’s low and high coverage rates and whether they describe one coat or the complete system. Per-coat coverage multiplies exposed area by coat count; complete-system coverage uses a multiplier of one. Lower required gallons use the higher coverage rate, and higher gallons use the lower rate. Buying uses the higher-gallon estimate, then entered reserve, then whole selected containers. Only the chosen container becomes a purchase line.

containers = ceil(higher required gallons × (1 + reserve/100) ÷ selected container gallons)

Keep the label attached

Record the product/substrate confirmation and exact label source; the tool does not supply universal coverage or approve compatibility. Absorption, surface texture, application loss and coat requirements remain product/site questions. Unknown prices stay unknown. The range is a coverage sensitivity calculation, not a prediction of actual application yield.
