This guide supports a material takeoff for level, axis-aligned deck regions. It does not design the framing, choose a board product, approve an installation method, or establish code compliance.
Measurement steps
- Draw a plan view with one horizontal and one vertical reference axis. Keep every supported edge parallel to one of those axes.
- Break the finished deck surface into labelled, non-overlapping included rectangles. Record each rectangle's
xandyorigin, width, and height from the same origin. - Draw openings and other areas that receive no decking as exclusion rectangles. Record them with the same origin and axes; do not subtract their area by hand.
- Confirm which direction the boards will run. Board direction determines the perpendicular coverage direction and the cut lengths.
- Record the actual installed board face width and intended clear gap. Use finished product dimensions, not only a nominal trade name.
- Mark picture-frame borders and breaker boards as separate strips. Record their actual width and the supported seam location they replace.
- Mark the existing joist centre lines that the selected fastening method will use. Do not ask the calculator to invent joist spacing or framing.
- Copy available stock lengths, saw kerf, reusable-offcut threshold, fastening rate, package quantity, and optional prices from the selected products.
Use one origin for the whole sketch. Two rectangles that merely touch may describe one connected surface, but overlapping included rectangles should be corrected instead of counted twice. An exclusion must describe an area intentionally left without field boards.

Sketch example
For an L-shaped surface, enter two non-overlapping included rectangles from the same origin instead of entering one bounding rectangle and guessing at a deduction. A step across only part of a board row requires a longitudinal rip that this release does not model; the calculator blocks that case and asks for separate supported regions or a manual takeoff. For a rectangular hatch or planter opening, add a measured exclusion rectangle and align its transverse edges to full row edges. If the board direction changes, divide the work into separate calculations unless the calculator explicitly supports that transition.
Common mistakes
- Adding rectangle areas and counting overlaps twice
- Subtracting an opening manually and also entering it as an exclusion
- Swapping the board-run direction and perpendicular coverage direction
- Measuring nominal board width instead of installed face width
- Assuming every board can be joined at every joist
- Treating an arbitrary offcut as reusable without checking length and product rules
- Mixing face-screw and hidden-fastener package assumptions in one estimate
- Entering joist spacing as though it proves the existing framing is suitable
The takeoff is only as complete as the measured surface, selected products, and explicitly entered seam and fastening assumptions. Verify layout, framing, ventilation, drainage, clearances, attachment, and installation requirements with the selected manufacturer's current instructions and the authority having jurisdiction.
