Construction Square Footage Calculator

Measure construction coverage using rectangles, triangles, circles and trapezoids, with multiple sections and separate gross, excluded and net areas.

What this worksheet covers

Separate gross surface coverage, excluded openings and net construction area across measured simple shapes.

Surface measurement for material estimating, not a legal survey or piece-layout plan. Exclusions must be wholly inside, non-overlapping and applicable to the selected material; those spatial conditions need your field sketch.

Import a saved measurement

Select a source, then an existing field with the same measurement unit. Add region or station rows first when needed. Confirm physical meaning and datum; importing a number does not approve a design or replace the rest of the required measurements.

Included construction sections

For L shapes, split into non-overlapping rectangles. Use perpendicular heights for triangles/trapezoids, and radius, not diameter, for circles.

Optional openings / excluded sections

Subtract only areas wholly inside the included footprint, once. Location and overlap are your sketch checks.

Enter the measured layout and selected product information, then calculate. Exact schedules and a drawing appear here.

Measure the surface that will actually consume material

A room floor, deck surface and lot footprint are different measurement records. Choose the relevant mode, then add simple shapes with their own dimensions. Use a radius for circles and perpendicular heights for triangles and trapezoids.

Worked example: an L-shaped patio around a planter

A 12 × 10 ft rectangle and a non-overlapping 6 × 4 ft wing total 144 ft². A 2 × 3 ft planter wholly inside removes 6 ft², leaving 138 ft² = 15⅓ yd² = 12.82061952 m². Keep gross area available when checking material layouts.

Continue to Deck Boards, Pavers, Drywall or Insulation with the appropriate surface datum and product rules. Use located corners and triangles when overlap and exclusion containment need a geometric check. Use Cubic Yard when an area must become a layer volume.

Does subtracting an opening guarantee fewer boards?

No. Net area describes coverage. Stock lengths, sheet placement, offcut reuse and product instructions determine the actual purchase; an opening may not remove a whole purchasable piece.

Version 1.0.0 uses unrounded intermediate arithmetic and displays up to four decimal places. Measurements can be saved locally in Planner and handed off explicitly. Supplier rounding and piece-layout rules belong in the downstream material calculator.
