Formula version: 1.1.0. This methodology describes a published quantity takeoff for one homogeneous, ordinary yard-drain material group whose route, dimensions, pipe, slope, outlet, discharge, and products were already selected. It performs no hydrology, drainage design, excavation planning, legal approval, compatibility decision, or installation engineering.
Permanent scope boundary
The takeoff cannot be used for foundation or basement drainage, retaining walls, traffic areas, septic work, erosion or scour control, groundwater or flood protection, or structural applications. It also excludes excavation and shoring methods, soil stability, utility-clearance decisions, permits, easements, property boundaries, contaminated soil, spoil, backfill, and restoration quantities. One calculation shares one envelope, pipe outside diameter/product, and fabric product; start another calculation when any of those facts change.
Gross envelope and optional pipe model
For segment i with length Lᵢ, entered envelope width W, and height H:
gross envelopeᵢ = Lᵢ × W × H
total gross envelope = Σ gross envelopeᵢ
For actual pipe outside diameter D and entered pipe length Pᵢ, the visible
smooth-cylinder approximation is:
modeled OD-cylinder displacement = Σ π × (D ÷ 2)² × Pᵢ
This is not exact physical displacement for corrugated exteriors, bells, sockets, fittings, or other geometry. The user must explicitly select one purchase policy:
- Gross envelope: no pipe subtraction.
- OD-cylinder adjusted model: gross envelope minus the displayed modeled cylinder.
Both gross envelope and modeled displacement remain visible. The result is called a modeled geometric volume, never exact physical gravel.
Supplier conversion, reserve, mass, and bags
The documented supplier-volume conversion factor F defaults to 1.0. A
source and basis are required when it differs from 1.0. Gravel reserve R
remains a separately labeled percentage:
modeled order volume = selected modeled volume × (1 + R ÷ 100) × F
The interface shows the reserve, supplier conversion, and combined effect so they are not mistaken for interchangeable compaction or waste assumptions.
Bulk mass is available only from an exact supplier/material record with a stated loose, compacted, or other documented density basis:
order mass = modeled order volume × documented matching-basis density
Bag mode accepts only a labeled net material volume per bag, not package mass, area coverage, or an unspecified installed yield:
bag count = ceil(modeled order volume ÷ labeled net material volume per bag)
Full precision is retained through conversion. A relative numerical tolerance is used only to prevent binary floating-point noise at an exact integer boundary; it is not construction allowance. Whole purchase units round once at the final ceiling.
Pipe stock, internal joints, and reserve
Non-reusable fixed sections round independently for every straight run. The tool counts internal section joints. It purchases a separate straight coupling at each joint only when the cited product evidence and user acknowledgement say that every such field joint consumes one separately purchased compatible coupling. Integral bells, sockets, or other joining systems are not inferred.
Reusable stock allocation keeps every continuous run intact. Its documented objective is fewest stock pieces, then purchased usable length, discarded remainder, reusable remainder, and stable option order. It never optimizes price implicitly.
Cutting loss per field cut and unusable stock-start/end allowances default to zero and come only from the selected product or user plan. A pipe reserve percentage creates a visible target. If allocated stock does not meet that target, the result reports the shortfall; it does not silently choose another stock length.
Fittings, end treatments, cleanouts, outlets, adapters, tees, wyes, and bends remain explicit user-entered lines.
Open-ended rectangular fabric wrap
For one total top-flap overlap O, the developed strip width is:
strip width = W + 2 × H + O
The takeoff is explicitly open-ended and includes no end-closure folds. The along-run piece-joint overlap is user-entered from the selected product/design. Roll width produces one strip unless the product evidence explicitly confirms that width-wise slitting into longitudinal strips is permitted for this use. The tool selects no geotextile class, filtration property, orientation, seam, or suitability rule.
Prefabricated bundle boundary
Generic prefabricated drain-bundle calculations are outside this calculator's supported scope. Nominal diameter, nominal length, and an “includes pipe” checkbox cannot prove effective installed coverage, aggregate or fabric omission, supplied pipe, connector requirements, cutting permission, residual reuse, or hydraulic and site equivalence. A product-specific quantity model would require those facts from an exact cited source before producing quantities.
Product evidence
Quantity-driving product records retain manufacturer or supplier, exact product/SKU, source document and URL, the relevant stated fact with units and basis, source revision/date when available, review date, compatibility key, and an acknowledgement that the user verified the data against that source. The acknowledgement is not MaterialNest approval.
Before digging in the United States, contact 811 Before You Dig and wait for the required utility responses. Outside the United States, use the official utility-location and excavation process for the project location. Excavations can collapse and cause serious injury. Follow applicable excavation-safety requirements and do not enter an unprotected trench. Confirm that the selected outlet and discharge comply with local requirements and will not damage structures, neighboring property, utilities, or waterways. Local authorities, exact manufacturers, suppliers, and qualified site or drainage professionals control questions outside this quantity-only scope.
