This guide supports quantities only after the route, envelope, pipe, slope, outlet, discharge, and products have already been selected. It does not design or approve a drain.
Confirm the scope first
Use one calculation only for an ordinary yard-drain material group sharing one gravel-envelope width and height, pipe outside diameter/product, and fabric product. Start another calculation when any of those change.
Do not use this takeoff for foundations or basements, retaining walls, traffic areas, septic work, erosion, groundwater, flood protection, or structural applications. Excavation methods and safety, utility clearances, permits, easements, property boundaries, contaminated soil, spoil, backfill, and restoration quantities are also outside scope.
Field and product record
- Record each already-designed straight run with a stable label, envelope length, and pipe length. Split at fittings and other design boundaries.
- Record the shared gravel-envelope width and height. These are not automatically the full excavation dimensions.
- Record the selected pipe's actual outside diameter, not nominal or inside diameter.
- Choose whether gravel purchasing uses the conservative gross envelope or the separately displayed smooth OD-cylinder subtraction model.
- If a supplier-volume conversion differs from
1.0, retain the supplier's source and stated basis. Keep the separate reserve percentage distinct. - For bulk mass, retain the exact material, density value/unit, and whether the supplier states a loose, compacted, or other basis.
- For bags, enter only labeled net material volume per bag. Do not enter package mass, area coverage, or an unspecified yield.
- For pipe, record stock lengths, usable-end allowances, cutting loss, and whether each field section joint consumes a separately purchased coupling.
- Enter every selected fitting and end treatment explicitly.
- For an open-ended rectangular fabric wrap, record total top-flap overlap, along-run piece-joint overlap, and roll dimensions. Do not assume the roll may be slit width-wise unless the exact product permits that use.
For every quantity-driving product fact, retain the manufacturer/supplier, exact SKU, source document and URL, relevant stated fact with units and basis, source revision/date when available, and date reviewed.
What the results mean
Gross envelope, modeled OD-cylinder displacement, selected modeled gravel, supplier conversion, reserve, package surplus, stock remainder, pipe reserve shortfall, joints, couplings, and fabric allocation remain separately visible. The takeoff does not convert any of them into a drainage-design or product- suitability decision.
Prefabricated drain-bundle calculations are outside this calculator's supported scope because a generic diameter/length record cannot establish effective installed coverage, included components, connector requirements, cutting permission, residual reuse, or equivalence to a conventional design.
Before digging in the United States, contact 811 Before You Dig and wait for required utility responses. Outside the United States, use the official utility-location and excavation process for the project location.
Excavations can collapse and cause serious injury. Follow applicable excavation-safety requirements and do not enter an unprotected trench. Confirm that the selected outlet and discharge comply with local requirements and will not damage structures, neighboring property, utilities, or waterways.
