Walk the proposed fence line and record every straight centreline segment separately. Mark corners and ends, then record each gate on its segment with both an offset and a clear opening width. This produces a checkable layout instead of one perimeter number that hides gate and corner conditions.

Materials to verify
- Sketch property lines, fence lines, buildings, slopes, utilities, and planned access points.
- Label straight segments A, B, C, and so on.
- Measure each segment along the intended fence centreline using one unit system.
- Mark shared corners so adjoining segments reuse one physical endpoint.
- Record every gate's owning segment, distance from the segment start, and clear opening width.
- Record grade changes rather than averaging them into a flat line.
- Confirm fence height and the selected mesh, framework, gates, and bottom system.
- Copy package and stock lengths from the products that can actually be purchased.
Worked measurement record
Suppose the sketch has three connected segments:
- Segment A: 40 feet.
- Segment B: 60 feet.
- Segment C: 35 feet.
- Gate G1: 4 feet wide on segment A, starting 12 feet from A's start.
- Gate G2: 3 feet wide on segment C, starting 20 feet from C's start.
Total centreline length is 135 feet. The two gates total 7 feet, leaving 128 feet of base covered length before any user-selected waste. Keep both gates separate: each creates its own boundary conditions, and their widths must be deducted before mesh, top-rail, and enabled tension-wire stock are rounded.
Do not enter only 128 feet. That would lose the actual segment endpoints, both gate locations, and the geometry needed for post categories.
Field-sheet checklist
- Segment labels and centreline lengths.
- Endpoint labels and whether each is an end or shared corner.
- Gate labels, offsets, and clear widths.
- Fence height and grade-change notes.
- Mesh-roll length.
- Top-rail stock length.
- Optional tension-wire coil length.
- Product-selected maximum line-post spacing.
- Locations needing pull, brace, or other system-specific conditions.
- Hardware list to verify with supplier or manufacturer.
Common mistakes
- Measuring only the lot perimeter instead of the actual fence path.
- Deducting gate width without recording where the gate sits.
- Counting one shared corner twice.
- Using the gate leaf's nominal name instead of the required finished opening.
- Ignoring grade changes that affect field layout and material selection.
- Assuming one universal line-post spacing or footing size.
- Estimating bands, caps, ties, and gate hardware without selecting a complete system.

Limits and sources
The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute product manual, revised March 2017, defines system terminology and shows that post selection and spacing depend on factors including fence configuration and wind context.
