A useful chain-link takeoff separates predictable linear stock and post categories from fittings that depend on the selected system. Calculate mesh, rail, optional tension wire, gates, and posts from a labelled layout; then verify every cap, band, tie, brace, rail end, and gate component against a complete product specification.

Worked takeoff: 100 feet with one gate
Assume a straight 100-foot fence with one 4-foot gate, 50-foot mesh rolls, 10-foot top-rail stock, and 10 percent user-selected waste.
Base covered length is 100 - 4 = 96 feet. Waste allowance is 96 x 10% = 9.6 feet, so adjusted covered length is 105.6 feet.
- Mesh:
ceil(105.6 / 50) = 3rolls. - Top rail:
ceil(105.6 / 10) = 11stock pieces. - Gate: 1 whole gate line.
- Posts: calculated separately from the segment, gate location, and selected maximum spacing.
This example does not determine fittings. A 100-foot project with different terminal conditions, rail connections, fabric attachment spacing, or gate hardware can need a different hardware list even when its mesh total matches.

- Reconcile every segment and gate against the field sketch.
- Confirm stock lengths and package yields from current labels or data sheets.
- Match post categories to the selected product specification.
- Build the fittings list from the manufacturer's complete assembly details.
- Check gate hardware for the actual gate style and direction.
- Keep manually entered prices separate from quantity assumptions.
- Review delivery lengths and handling limits before ordering long rail or posts.
- Retain receipts and product documents for substitutions.
Common mistakes
- Applying waste before deducting gates.
- Treating a roll or stock-piece result as cut-layout instructions.
- Counting gate posts again as ordinary line posts.
- Assuming all terminal and line posts are interchangeable.
- Buying fittings from a generic list without matching the chosen system.
- Using fence height alone to select posts or footings.
