Project decision / 01
Wood vs. chain-link vs. vinyl fence
Choose the visual and maintenance character of the fence first. The measured line, gates, terrain, wind exposure, and product system then determine a useful quote.
Compare the systems
| Decision factor | Wood | Chain-link | Vinyl / PVC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sightline | Board spacing and height can create privacy. | Mesh keeps the boundary visible; privacy needs an added screen. | Solid panels can screen views; open pickets are also available. |
| System parts | Posts, rails, boards or panels, gates, fasteners. | Posts, mesh, top rail, tension wire or bands, fittings, gates. | Matched posts, rails, panels or pickets, caps, and gate hardware. |
| Routine upkeep | Inspect finish, fasteners, and decay-prone ground contact. | Inspect coating damage, tension, ties, gates, and vegetation. | Wash as directed and check panels, brackets, posts, and gates. |
| Quote drivers | Species, treatment, board style, finish, labor, gate count. | Coating, wire gauge, mesh height, framework, fittings, gates. | Profile quality, panel style, post reinforcement, gates, labor. |
Where each can fit
Choose wood when the desired privacy and finish matter enough to budget for finishing and periodic inspection. Specify ground-contact posts from the treatment end tag, rather than assuming every treated board is suitable below grade.
Choose chain-link when a visible boundary and a defined coated-steel mesh system suit the site. Confirm mesh gauge, coating, frame, fittings, and gate hardware as one compatible assembly.
Choose vinyl when an opaque prefabricated panel or picket look and washing rather than repainting fit the plan. Check the exact manufacturer system and any post reinforcement; a profile standard alone does not establish assembly strength.
Field sketch / exposure and parts
This sketch compares visual screening only. Footings, height, wind exposure, and gate loads need site-specific decisions.
Before requesting bids
Compare complete installed systems
Ask each bidder to name the fence height, line and gate lengths, post and footing approach, material/coating or treatment grade, gate hardware, disposal, finishing, and warranty. Material-only unit prices will not compare installation, future finish work, or repairs. No universal price ranking is assumed here because local labor, soil, and selected products can reverse it.
A gate changes the comparison
Check the loaded opening, not just the fence bay
For a sloped side yard with one four-foot clear gate, mark the two gate posts separately from line posts and ask each supplier how its chosen gate frame, hinges, latch, and post reinforcement handle that opening. Wood boards can follow a stepped or racked layout only as the selected system permits; mesh tension and vinyl panel fit require different details. Record the common run and opening once on the wood-fence field worksheet or chain-link measurement guide before comparing takeoffs.
Optional measurement handoff
Use one measured run in both fence tools
Enter a straight-run length to prefill the wood and chain-link calculators. For corners and gates, sketch individual sections in each calculator after opening it.
The optional run uses this tab's temporary browser storage. It expires after 30 minutes and is removed when the selected calculator reads it. If storage is unavailable, enter it in the calculator.
For vinyl, use the selected-system worksheet with the exact panel, post, mounting and kit specification.
Evidence and limits
The American Wood Protection Association homeowner guidance distinguishes ground-contact treatment from above-ground products. The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute product manual documents the mesh, coating, framework, and fitting choices. ASTM F14.30 lists active PVC profile and installation standards; profile properties do not settle a fence assembly design.
This is a choice guide for ordinary residential boundaries. Property lines, utilities, slopes, wind, pool barriers, animals, security goals, local permits, and product installation instructions can change the decision. Resolve those before building.
