Make a plan-view sketch before opening the calculator. Break the railing into straight post-centre sections, label shared endpoints, and record gates, open edges, stairs, and stock lengths separately. A labelled sketch preserves geometry that a single perimeter measurement loses.
Use the deck-railing materials calculator after the sketch is complete. Enter section geometry first, then product dimensions such as post face width, baluster width, and available rail stock length.
Keep stairs separate
- Walk the perimeter in one direction and label each horizontal section.
- Measure each section along the intended post centreline.
- Give a shared physical corner one matching endpoint on both adjoining sections.
- Record each opening on its owning section with distance from the section start and clear opening width.
- Mark stair railing separately from horizontal railing.
- Measure the selected post and baluster face widths.
- Copy stock lengths and layout limits from the actual product documents.
- Photograph or retain the sketch so the entered model can be checked later.
Worked field sketch
Assume a project has:
- Section A: 12 feet from terminal to shared corner.
- Section B: 10 feet from that shared corner to the next terminal.
- One 3-foot opening on section A, beginning 4 feet from its start.
- 4-inch post face width.
- 1.5-inch baluster face width.
- 6-foot top-rail stock and 6-foot bottom-rail stock.
- A stair run that will be entered as a separate measured stair-railing length.
Do not reduce the two sections to a 22-foot perimeter. Keep the shared corner connection and the opening's 4-foot offset. This lets the calculator create the runs on both sides of the opening, count the corner once, and create complete post-to-post rail cuts rather than treating all stock as one pooled length.
Field-sheet checklist
- Project name and sketch date.
- Unit system used everywhere.
- Section label, length, start endpoint, and end endpoint.
- Terminal versus shared-corner endpoint.
- Opening label, owning section, offset, and width.
- Separate stair-railing length.
- Actual post face width and baluster width.
- Selected maximum post spacing and maximum baluster gap, with their source.
- Top- and bottom-rail stock lengths.
- Product-specific brackets, fasteners, cut allowances, and other items to verify outside the calculator.
Common measurement mistakes
- Mixing clear section length with post-centre length.
- Drawing two separate corners where one physical post connects both sections.
- Recording an opening width without its position.
- Combining stair and horizontal lengths.
- Entering nominal lumber or component names instead of measured finished widths.
- Assuming offcuts can always join an unspliced post-to-post rail.
- Measuring before confirming the final product system and attachment locations.

Limits and sources
This measurement process does not establish guard necessity, height, loading, post attachment, stair geometry, or code compliance.
