Reconcile a post count against a labelled railing sketch. The useful handoff is a list of physical post positions, not one total derived from the whole perimeter.
Start with the fixed post conditions
Walk the horizontal railing path and identify its ends, shared corners and opening boundaries. Give one physical corner the same endpoint on both adjoining sections. A break at stair access belongs on the level-railing sketch, while stair posts and connections need their separate project layout.

Use post-centre section lengths throughout. Opening geometry here differs from the clear-face gate dimensions in the fence tools. Obtain maximum post spacing from your selected system or project information; this guide does not choose it.
Test whether a corner was counted twice
Two 12-foot sections meeting at one corner, with a user-selected 6-foot maximum spacing, have five installed posts: two terminals, one shared corner and two intermediate posts. The post calculator keeps those categories visible. Six posts would double-count the connected corner; treating the path as one 24-foot straight line would hide it.
Carry stations back to the sketch
Read the calculated spacing for each run and follow its stations from the named start endpoint. Check both sides of every opening separately. Moving an opening may change the required intermediate count even when the opening width stays the same.
Keep the station drawing with the purchase record, and identify any extras as spares. Post size, attachment and structural adequacy remain outside the count.
