Review the order in the same sequence as the bays
- 01Posts define clear openings
- The entered post width is removed from each post-centre span. Baluster counts belong to those individual clear openings, so changing post geometry can change both rails and infill.
- 02Rail pieces need a feasible cut plan
- Each horizontal post-to-post cut must fit one stock piece without a splice. The stock plan reuses fitting offcuts, then enforces your waste-adjusted minimum. A pooled length alone is not the order.
- 03Keep additions identifiable
- The purchase list distinguishes calculated posts, balusters and rail stock from optional materials you enter manually. Brackets and fasteners are not generated from an installation schedule. Stair length does not supply stair posts or baluster geometry.

What the takeoff includes
The rail-stock and baluster list estimates purchases for the sections you describe, including your waste choice. It does not settle guard strength, fastener selection, stair details, or code acceptance. Verify the actual system instructions and local requirements, and obtain professional review where the work is safety-critical.

- Measurement datum
- Railing sections use post-centre lengths; each clear rail and baluster opening subtracts the entered post width.
- Rounding
- Post spans and baluster counts round up at their constraints. Unspliced rail cuts are packed into whole stock pieces, then the waste-adjusted minimum is enforced.
- Known exclusions
- Structural design, brackets, fastener schedules, cut allowances, and stair geometry are excluded.

Manual derivation
- Three 2000 mm post-centre spans create three 1900 mm clear openings; each needs 12 balusters.
- The three unspliced 1900 mm rail cuts total 5700 mm. Neither 3000 mm nor 2400 mm stock can hold two cuts, so each rail type needs three pieces.

Manual derivation
- The 2 m opening leaves two 4 m runs. Each has two 2 m spans, for four 1900 mm clear baluster openings and 48 balusters.
- Each 3000 mm stock piece holds only one 1900 mm rail cut. Four pieces per rail type also exceed the 5% linear-waste minimum.
Rail stock and stair allowances
Can rails be spliced between posts?
No. Each calculated rail cut must fit one entered stock piece. The calculator does not invent an unsupported splice.
Does this calculate stair baluster geometry?
No. Optional stair railing is kept as a separate linear allowance; stair posts, rise/run, angles, and connections are excluded.

Reconcile the order with the chosen railing system
- Assuming this provides post attachment or load guidance.
- Forgetting waste when buying stock rails.
- Including stairs without treating them as a separate estimate.
