What to measure first
- Sketch each connected or independent fence run and identify shared corners.
- Measure run lengths along the post centreline.
- Mark each gate as a clear face-to-face opening and record where that clear opening begins.
- Record actual post, board, panel, rail-stock, kerf, and package dimensions from the products you plan to use.
How the estimate is produced
The existing MaterialNest post-layout engine establishes shared endpoint, gate, and intermediate post nodes. Each resulting clear bay is then filled independently with vertical boards or panels. Rail cuts are assigned to selected stock lengths without silently shortening or splicing them.
Important limits
This first release supports vertical solid or spaced boards and preassembled panels on level, one-dimensional runs. Horizontal, shadowbox, board-on-board, sloped, racked, and structural gate designs are outside this calculator.
Five checked numerical examples
These documented scenarios use repeatable inputs so you can compare the displayed quantities with the published methodology. They do not approve a project design or product selection.
- Three ordinary spaced bays: 4 posts, 3 bays, 39 boards, 6 rail-stock pieces, 180 fasteners, and 2 packages.
- Four bays with a clear gate: 6 posts, 4 filled bays, 56 boards, 12 rail cuts, 384 fasteners, and 2 packages.
- Panel mode: 5 selected panels distributed across 2 measured bays; loose-board and rail requirements remain excluded.
- Rail-stock assignment: 70, 70, 40, and 40 inch cuts fit into two 120 inch pieces with one 20 inch reusable remainder.
- Fastener package rounding: 875 required fasteners become 5 packages of 200, leaving 125 package-surplus fasteners.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring gate width to post centres instead of the clear face-to-face opening.
- Entering nominal board or rail sizes when the selected product has different actual dimensions.
- Treating a materials result as a structural, footing, wind, gate, permit, or code design.
