Raised-Bed Frame Cuts and Inside Fill Planner

Plan selected raised-bed assemblies, actual board cuts and inside soil fill, with separate stock remnants and same-product purchase quotes.

What this worksheet covers

Reconcile actual board thickness with a documented butt-corner assembly, multiple bed dimensions, physical stock cuts, a supplied fastener schedule and inside fill before comparing exact same-product soil quotes.

Frame/fill arithmetic for a selected documented assembly only. No tall soil-retaining structure design, treatment/food-safety claim, soil recommendation or gardening advice.

Import a saved measurement

Select a source, then an existing field with the same measurement unit. Add region or station rows first when needed. Confirm physical meaning and datum; importing a number does not approve a design or replace the rest of the required measurements.

Same-product soil quote scenarios

Each alternative must match the selected soil identity. Unknown fees stay blank until confirmed. Only the chosen bag or bulk basket enters Planner.

Enter the measured layout and selected product information, then calculate. Exact schedules and a drawing appear here.

Outside frame size and inside fill are different measurements

This planner supports a documented four-board butt-corner assembly: either the long pair or the short pair continues through the corners while the other pair fits between. Enter actual board thickness and height, then identify whether each bed’s dimensions describe its outside frame or inside clear fill. Final physical cuts follow that selected assembly; no hidden nominal-lumber deduction is assumed.

A 4 × 8 ft outside bed with actual 1½ in thickness has a 3¾ × 7¾ ft inside footprint. At an entered 10 in fill depth, that is 24.21875 ft³ per bed before reserve. Its selected course height and fastening schedule must come from the documented assembly, never from this arithmetic example.

Preserve the matching material identity across beds

All sizes in one record share the same checked frame profile. The stock allocator retains cut IDs per bed instance/course/side and reports kerf, end trims and reusable remnants. Soil remains a separate product from aggregate. Exact same-product bag/bulk quotes use their own unit contents, minimums, order increments and confirmed fees; alternative baskets do not become two simultaneous orders.

Use this resource for the selected frame and fill quantities. Tall soil-retaining capacity, corner strength, wood-treatment food-safety claims, soil suitability and gardening advice require their own applicable sources and are outside its scope.

Method and limits

Rectangular butt-jointed frames use actual board dimensions. The outside footprint, inside fill space, cut schedule and supplier receipt are separate quantities.

Which boards pass through the corners?

For each of up to 30 bed rows, enter quantity, actual thickness/height, course count, inside or outside dimension datum, and long-through or short-through assembly. Inside dimensions subtract twice the thickness from outside dimensions. Long-through construction cuts two outside-length boards and two inside-width boards per course; short-through construction cuts two inside-length and two outside-width boards. Multiply by bed and course counts before physical unspliced stock allocation.

inside length/width = outside length/width − 2 × actual board thickness

Stock, fasteners and soil

Boards use exact stock lengths, trim at both stock ends, saw kerf and reusable-remnant limits, with a maximum of 2,000 cuts. The bounded allocator reports a valid plan and any heuristic/fallback condition, not a guaranteed minimum. No board percentage reserve is added automatically. Fasteners count four corners per bed/course times supplied fasteners per corner, then entered reserve and whole packages.

Fill sums inside length × inside width × selected fill depth × bed count; fill depth cannot exceed course height. Soil gets its own reserve and exact bag/bulk content. Supplier minimums are applied before increment rounding. Dated quotes must share the selected soil identity; only the selected quote becomes an order. Complete price, final delivery/fee and material-only tax terms are required before a receipt can be calculated.

Material suitability is not selected here

The source records identify the exact boards, fasteners and soil quoted. This tool does not recommend a wood species, treatment, food-growing suitability, soil blend or load-bearing wall design. Its supported comparison is assembly geometry and documented purchasing, not a universal bed-material ranking.

Before saving to Planner, reconcile the board cut allocation and retained remnants, then select one dated soil quote with confirmed minimums, increments and delivery terms. Reopen the saved worksheet to revise stock or quote choices; alternative quotes are not combined orders.
