Measure the clear opening between the inside faces of the two posts, measure the actual baluster width, and choose a maximum clear gap that is allowed for your project. The required count is the smallest whole number that lets every gap, including both end gaps, stay at or below that maximum.
Use the baluster-spacing calculator when you have those three measurements. It calculates one opening at a time, repeats that count only for truly identical openings, and keeps any user-selected spare quantity separate.
Before you buy
- Verify the applicable limit. Do not assume the calculator's 4-inch preset applies to every guard, stair, jurisdiction, or product. Confirm the adopted local code and the railing manufacturer's instructions.
- Measure face to face. Use the finished clear opening, not the distance between post centres.
- Measure the real baluster. Nominal product names may not equal the installed face width.
- Separate unequal openings. Measure and calculate them independently instead of multiplying one representative result.
- Decide on spares last. Add only the repair or damage allowance you intentionally want; the calculator does not add one automatically.
Worked example: one 8-foot clear opening
Assume a measured clear opening of 96 inches, balusters that are 1.5 inches wide, and a user-selected maximum clear gap of 4 inches.
The minimum count is ceil((96 - 4) / (1.5 + 4)) = 17 balusters. Seventeen balusters occupy 25.5 inches. The remaining 70.5 inches are divided across 18 gaps, including both ends, producing equal gaps of about 3.92 inches.

Opening-by-opening purchase checklist
- Label every opening on a sketch: A, B, C, and so on.
- Record each finished clear width.
- Group openings only when their widths really match.
- Record the selected baluster's actual width.
- Record the verified maximum clear gap and where it came from.
- Add the calculated whole counts.
- Add a separately chosen spare quantity, if wanted.
- Recheck the first dry-fitted opening before cutting or fastening the rest.
Common mistakes
- Measuring from post centre to post centre adds post material that is not available for balusters.
- Dividing the opening only by baluster width ignores the gaps.
- Forgetting the two end gaps can leave the final space different from all the others.
- Rounding a fractional count down can make the resulting gaps larger than the selected maximum.
- Treating visually similar openings as identical can accumulate field error.
Limits and sources
