Gate Opening and Clearance Planner

A measured opening and sampled swing worksheet for a gate you have already selected. Unmeasured sweep areas remain unknown.

What this worksheet covers

Combine exact selected hardware allowances with a sampled gate swing, ground and obstacle measurement sheet.

Physical measurement worksheet only. No hinge/post design, containment, equipment-operation or pool-barrier approval.

Import a saved measurement

Select a source, then an existing field with the same measurement unit. Add region or station rows first when needed. Confirm physical meaning and datum; importing a number does not approve a design or replace the rest of the required measurements.

Gate leaves (one, or left and right)

0 of 2 supported rows

Measured ground across sweep

0 of 200 supported rows

Measured obstacle footprints

Exact product / selected-plan source

Enter the measured layout and selected product information, then calculate. Exact schedules and a drawing appear here.

Method and limits

A measured sweep worksheet for one or two rigid leaves. Opening width, passage at the selected angle, sampled ground clearance, and possible obstacle contact are separate results.

Prepare the sweep record

  • Name a stable elevation datum and mark the closed leaf, hinge axis, swing direction and selected angle.
  • Measure ground at named angle/radius positions and locate obstacles from the left opening face, with positive Y inward.
  • Retain the exact hardware gap and pivot instructions; field units can differ between leaf width and hinge gaps.

Illustrative transfer: a 48 in leaf, 1 in hinge gap and 0.75 in closing gap give a 49.75 in opening. With leaf bottom at +3 in and ground samples at 0, +2 and +4 in, gaps are +3, +1 and −1 in. The last sample records interference despite the wide opening. A positive sample or no obstacle flag leaves unmeasured sweep space unresolved; resolve contact and remeasure rather than treating the worksheet as operating approval.

Opening, hinge offset, and passage

Enter each leaf width, hinge gap, hinge offset, thickness, bottom elevation, selected angle and swing direction. All ground samples and obstacles share the named datum. A two-leaf layout has one left and one right leaf. The opening adds leaf widths and hinge gaps, then the closing gap. Each sweep radius is leaf width plus hinge offset; the hinge gap positions its pivot.

At the selected angle, each leaf obstructs max(0, leaf width × cos(angle)) of the opening. The remaining nonnegative passage is compared with the entered equipment width. This projection is not a full equipment turning envelope.

opening = Σ(leaf width + hinge gap) + closing gap

What gets sampled

A ground sample must fall within its leaf’s entered radius and sweep angle. Its vertical gap is leaf-bottom elevation minus sampled ground elevation; zero or a negative value flags contact. The minimum applies only to the samples supplied. With no ground samples, clearance is unknown.

Rectangular obstacles have local coordinates, size and top elevation. Obstacles reaching the leaf bottom are checked along 72 angular subdivisions, with padding for half the leaf thickness and the angular step. Flags are conservative possible contacts, not a continuous collision proof.

No order or operating approval

There is no material purchase rounding, waste allowance or stock count in this tool. Displayed measurements are rounded to three decimal places. The fixed vertical, rigid-leaf model does not include sag, flex, hinge movement, equipment manoeuvring, gate strength or barrier compliance. Record the exact selected hardware instructions; the worksheet does not authenticate them.

Arithmetic checked against the current calculation source on 1 October 2026. Product instructions remain the exact records entered in this worksheet; recording a source is not external approval.
