The same roof area creates two different orders.

Shingles buy stated area in bundles. Metal panels must also fit the plane’s width and slope length. Compare complete installed systems before treating either material count as a price comparison.

One measured roof, two purchasing paths

Record each plane’s horizontal run, plan length and pitch. The roof-area guide explains why house floor area is not sloped roof coverage. Product suitability for pitch, substrate and exposure comes from the selected instructions; the calculator does not approve that choice.

Shingle bundles

A useful option to quote when the selected shingle system suits the roof and the installer can price its complete accessories and details. The calculator divides reserve-adjusted sloped area by exact bundle coverage and rounds up. Shingle-piece count is derived from that whole-bundle order, not a cut map.

Ask about starter, ridge/hip products, valleys, penetrations and how complex intersections affect the entered reserve. These remain separate from field coverage. For repair planning, ask how matching material will be retained and how localized damage will be assessed.

Metal panels

A useful option to quote when the exact profile, effective cover width, available lengths and fastening system fit the roof. The calculator counts width positions and slope-length courses on each plane, then applies panel reserve. It cannot reduce the order to total area divided by nominal panel area.

Ask how panels will be delivered, handled and detailed at valleys and penetrations, and whether full-length panels are available. Upkeep questions differ between exposed-fastener and concealed-fastener systems; request the exact inspection and repair instructions rather than treating all metal roofs alike.

A longer slope is a purchase hold

If a plane’s slope length exceeds entered metal stock length, MaterialNest shows preliminary panel field positions and withholds the metal purchase line. Approved end laps reduce usable course coverage, and this tool does not resolve that schedule.

For an illustrative 18 ft slope and 16 ft stock, counting two nominal courses does not settle overlap, fastening or trim. Obtain a product-specific course plan or a suitable full-length panel before ordering. This limit is documented in the roof method and field checks.

Compare the installed quote, not bundle versus panel price

  • Use identical measured planes, existing-roof removal scope, access and disposal assumptions in both bids.
  • Itemize deck repairs, underlayment net coverage after laps, flashing, valleys, closures, edges and penetrations. The calculator covers only the entered subset.
  • Keep material reserve separate from labour and installation detail allowances. Ask the bidder to explain each allowance instead of copying one percentage across systems.
  • Request workmanship terms, product warranty conditions, inspection tasks and the method/cost basis for future repair. No fixed lifespan or payback is assumed here.

The Multi-plane Roof Takeoff can compare field quantities with your selected product values. It does not price either installed system or calculate fastener, flashing, closure or penetration schedules. Actual local bids are needed to compare cost and installation effort.

Where product instructions change the comparison

McElroy Metal’s panel overview distinguishes panel systems and identifies slope, length and building geometry as selection factors. Its installation manuals and product information books provide the details for the exact profile; one system’s laps or fasteners cannot be transferred to another.

GAF’s comparison discusses both covering choices and product-specific installation/warranty conditions. It is manufacturer guidance, not an independent local price quote. MaterialNest’s slope factor and whole-package rules are internal takeoff arithmetic.
